Fort McMurray, Alta – On May 15, 2026, between 12:55 p.m., and 1:48 p.m., Wood Buffalo RCMP responded to multiple complaints of an erratic driver northbound on Highway 63 at Airport Road (formerly Highway 69) in Fort McMurray. The suspect vehicle was described as a Blue Ford Ranger. RCMP located the vehicle on Highway 63 at Hardin Street and attempted a traffic stop. The driver failed to stop for Police and the Ford Ranger fled at a high rate of speed. A pursuit was not initiated due to concerns for public safety. RCMP identified that the registered owner of the vehicle had a Fort McMurray address and attended the residence.

The Ford Ranger was located parked in the driveway with the driver still behind the wheel.  The driver was initially arrested for flight from police.  Police observed that the driver also displayed signs of alcohol impairment. A demand was made of the driver, and they were subsequently arrested for impaired operation of a conveyance and provided breath samples at nearly four times the legal limit.

The driver, a 38-year-old resident of Fort McMurray, was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired;
  • Operation while over 80mg (alcohol); and
  • Flight from peace officer.

The individual was released from police custody and is set to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on June 24, 2026.

Wood Buffalo RCMP wishes to thank the citizens of Fort McMurray for reporting the driving behaviour.
