Wood Buffalo RCMP investigates weapons complaint, suspect arrested

Fort McMurray, Alta. – On May 29, 2026, at approximately 1:00 a.m., Wood Buffalo RCMP, along with Police Dog Services and Remote Piloted Aerial Systems (RPAS), responded to a 9-1-1 call for a suspect brandishing a knife while chasing a victim carrying a child near Raven Lane in Gregoire Lake Reserve, south of Fort McMurray. The victim was able to flee into a nearby residence and was not physically injured. When Police arrived on scene, the suspect had retreated alone into another residence, located on Spruce Drive. The suspect continued to brandish the knife and refused to exit the home on demand of RCMP. Alberta RCMP Real Time Operations Centre (RTOC) was engaged and Alberta RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT) were dispatched to assist. RCMP utilized the RAVE public safety notification system to advise local residents of the heavy police presence.
While ERT was en route, Wood Buffalo RCMP obtained a Feeney warrant and deployed OC spray into the residence. At approximately 3:00 a.m., following the commands of RCMP, the individual exited the home and was arrested without further incident.
A 23-year-old resident of Gregoire Lake Reserve, is facing charges:
- Assault with a weapon; and
- Possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose.
The individual was held for a judicial interim release hearing. They wer released from custody on a Release Order with conditions, and is set to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on June 17, 2026.
