Okotoks RCMP responds to community concern over release of offender

Okotoks, Alta.- Okotoks RCMP is updating the community about a resident, recently charged with possessing and accessing child sexual abuse materials. Following their arrest, they were held for a Judicial Interim Release hearing and was released from custody. 

The resident was released by the courts with numerous conditions. These conditions were thoughtfully placed with the community’s safety being top priority. Some of their conditions include: 

  • Must not attend withing 50 meters any public swimming area, school and school yard, daycare, playground, youth shelter, or public library, or any place where children under the age of 16 yrs may be present.
  • Must not communicate directly with any person under the age of 16.
  • Must not possess any devices with internet access or cameras. 

Okotoks RCMP understands that members of the community may have strong concerns and emotions regarding this matter. However, police have received reports of threats and comments suggesting that some individuals may take matters into their own hands. The RCMP want to be clear that threats, intimidation, harassment, or any form of vigilante action are unlawful and will be thoroughly investigated. Such actions can place public safety at risk, interfere with ongoing processes, and may result in criminal charges.

Community members are encouraged to express their concerns through lawful and respectful means and to allow the judicial process to proceed. The Okotoks RCMP remains committed to public safety and will continue to monitor the situation closely. 

To protect the integrity of the investigation, further questions about the file itself can be directed to ALERT. Anyone believing that a crime has been or is about to be committed is encouraged to call Okotoks RCMP. If the matter is felt to be of an urgent nature, please call 911 to report the location and circumstances.
