Wood Buffalo RCMP lay charges in 2022 firearms investigation

Fort McMurray, Alta – On May 12, 2026, Wood Buffalo RCMP charged a 30-year-old resident of Calgary after a lengthy firearms investigation originating in 2022. 

On June 17, 2022, at approximately 7:24 p.m. Wood Buffalo RCMP responded to a report of a shooting in the area of Sparrowhawk Drive in Fort McMurray. At the time the victim sustained a serious injury to their leg and the suspect shooter was not identified.

On June 18, 2022, a search warrant was executed at a residence on Sparrowhawk Drive, where the shooting occurred. In addition to locating and seizing evidence of the shooting, RCMP seized the following items in support of drug trafficking:

  • 20 grams of cocaine;
  • 286 grams of marihuana;
  • .98 gras of fentanyl, carfentanil and benzodiazepine;
  • 408 grams of phenacetin;
  • 30 tablets of Tylenol T3’s;
  • $6,695 in Canadian Currency;
  • Stolen .22 caliber rifle;
  • 2 cell phones; and
  • Drug paraphernalia.

Wood Buffalo RCMP continued to investigate and in April 2026, an individual was identified as the suspect involved in the shooting on June 17, 2022. They were charged with:

  • Aggravated Assault;
  • Discharging a firearm with intent to cause bodily harm;
  • Possession of a firearm contrary to a Firearms Prohibition x2;
  • Possessing a firearm when knowing possessing the firearm is unauthorized;
  • Carless storage of a firearm;
  • Proceeds of crime over $5000.00;
  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine; and
  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking carfentanil.

The individual was brought before a justice of the peace for a Judicial Interim release hearing and was remanded into custody. They are set to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on June 8, 2026.
