Stony Plain, Alta. – On June 7, 2026, at approximately 2:13 a.m., a Parkland RCMP officer on patrol observed an older Ford truck fail to stop for a red light while making a right turn at the intersection of 44 Avenue and Southpark Drive in Stony Plain. The vehicle then proceeded westbound at a high rate of speed.
Police followed the vehicle and observed it travelling at 120 km/h through Stony Plain, which is double the posted speed limit of 50 km/h in that area. At the time, Stony Plain was hosting an event near the area, resulting in increased vehicle and pedestrian traffic, as well as patrons leaving local establishments in the area.
The vehicle was subsequently stopped at the intersection of 48 Street and 49 Avenue. During the investigation, police determined the driver was impaired and operating a motor vehicle while under suspension.
As a result, the driver was issued:
- A violation ticket for careless driving;
- A 24-hour Immediate Roadside Suspension due to impairment; and
- A summons for driving while unauthorized.
The vehicle was also seized for 30 days under Alberta’s Suspended Driver Program.
“Driving impaired and at excessive speeds is a serious danger to everyone on the road,” said Inspector McGillivray of the Parkland RCMP. “This type of reckless behaviour puts motorists and pedestrians at risk, and the outcome could have been far more serious.”
