Fort McMurray, Alta. – Wood Buffalo RCMP are aware of a planned protest circulating on social media for community citizens to complete highway maintenance repairs on Highway 63 in Fort McMurray on June 12, 2026.

Wood Buffalo RCMP would like to remind citizens that being in the roadway poses significant risks and liability to them, motorists and other lawful users of the roadways. While the RCMP respects citizens constitutionally protected rights to protest, public safety must always be the overriding priority.  The Wood Buffalo RCMP will be monitoring this planned protest and will take necessary enforcement action to maintain public safety as required. RCMP encourage the public to report any concerns.

Wood Buffalo RCMP would like to remind the public that penalties for impeding traffic on the highway may lead to being ticketed under the Alberta Traffic Safety Act and charged under the Criminal Code.

To avoid breaking the law, Wood Buffalo RCMP ask that citizens refrain from:

  • Disrupting or impeding road traffic;
  • Parking vehicles on any part of the highway. Under that Alberta Traffic Safety Act, the definition of highway includes the shoulder and ditch; and
  • Obstructing or interfering with the use of any public or private property, roadways or infrastructure, either on foot or in a vehicle.

Although RCMP will be monitoring, the public are encouraged to report any unsafe behaviour to the Wood Buffalo RCMP at (780) 788‐4000 or 310-RCMP (7267). If you wish to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers at 1‐800‐222‐8477 (TIPS), online at www.P3Tips.com or by using the “P3 Tips” app available through the Apple App or Google Play Store.
