High River, Alta. – On June 16, 2026, at approximately 10:20 p.m., High River RCMP responded to a report of an armed robbery at a local business in High River. A suspect wearing a mask entered the business with a firearm, took cash from the register, and fled the scene on a bicycle. RCMP attended and immediately set up containment.
Resources were called in to assist, including Okotoks RCMP, the Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Police Dog Services (PDS). ERT and PDS were tracking a possible suspect when PDS Paskal was seriously injured. Cpl. Paul Cook, police dog handler, immediately recognized that Paskal was injured and rushed him to a Calgary veterinarian.
Police dogs are indispensable members of our policing teams. Their exceptional abilities help keep communities safe, assist officers in high-risk situations, and play a critical role in operational success. Our thought and prayers are with Cpl. Cook and Paskal, and we wish for a speedy recovery.
