Fort McMurray, Alta. – On June 22, 2026, at 12:41am, Wood Buffalo RCMP received a call to assist Regional Emergency Services on Chipewyan Prairie First Nation, south of Fort McMurray. EMS had come across an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) collision after it struck a pole. There were three youth riders, ages 11 thru 16, on the ATV at the time of the collision. All three sustained undisclosed injuries and were transported by ground ambulance to Northern Lights Regional Health Centre. It does not appear any of the youth were wearing helmets and it remains unclear who was operating the ATV. Alcohol may have been a factor.

Wood Buffalo RCMP continue to investigate the cause of the collision. Anyone who may have been a witness has been asked to contact the Wood Buffalo RCMP at (780) 788‐4000 or 310-RCMP (7267). If you wish to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers at 1‐800‐222‐8477 (TIPS), online at www.P3Tips.com or by using the “P3 Tips” app available through the Apple App or Google Play Store.

Whether riding an ATV, side-by-side, dirt bike, or other OHV, taking simple precautions can help prevent serious injuries and save lives.

Before you ride:

  • Always wear an approved helmet and appropriate protective gear.
  • Ensure your OHV is in good working condition.
  • Carry essential supplies, including water, a first aid kit, and a means of communication.
  • Ride only on designated trails and respect local regulations.
  • Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.

While riding:

  • Never operate an OHV while impaired by alcohol, cannabis, or other drugs.
  • Ride at a safe speed appropriate for trail and weather conditions.
  • Stay alert for other trail users, wildlife, and changing terrain.
  • Supervise young riders and ensure they are operating age-appropriate vehicles.
  • Impaired driving laws apply to OHVs, and riders found operating while impaired may face criminal charges.
