Fort McMurray, Alta. – Wood Buffalo RCMP have laid charges in connection with a lengthy fraud investigation related to a travel agency that was operating in Fort McMurray in 2019. In December 2019, Wood Buffalo RCMP received several reports from victims who had paid for travel services only to discover that reservations were never made. It was alleged that a male who operated ‘International Travel Services’ in Fort McMurray, took payment for flights and hotels and failed to follow through on booking with airlines and vacation destinations. Travellers showed up at the airport or all-inclusive resorts only to learn their reservations were never paid for.
During the lengthy investigation by Wood Buffalo RCMP General Investigation Section, more than 100 victims were identified who had paid for services and were left without transportation or accommodations. The combined total loss was near $500,000. Wood Buffalo RCMP have now laid criminal charges against the former owner / operator of ‘International Travel Services’.
“Fraud can have a significant impact on victims and communities. This lengthy investigation reflects our commitment to thoroughly pursing financial crimes and holding offenders accountable, no matter how long it takes.” says Staff Sergeant Mike Robinson, Acting Investigative Services Officer Wood Buffalo RCMP.
Ujeer Ahmed, a 58 year-old male, is facing charges:
- Fraud over $5,000; and
- Money laundering.
Police have been unable to locate Ujeer Ahmed who no longer resides in Fort McMurray. A warrant for his arrest has been issued.
