Wood Buffalo RCMP respond to impaired driver – suspect charged

Fort McMurray, Alta – On Aug. 1, 2026, at approximately 1:14 a.m., Wood Buffalo RCMP responded to multiple complaints of a suspected impaired driver northbound on Highway 63 driving towards Fort McMurray. The location of the suspect vehicle, a Grey Chevrolet Equinox, originated in Lac La Biche County, and was driving into Wood Buffalo RCMP jurisdiction. Prior to police locating the vehicle, the grey Chevrolet Equinox hit a deer and entered the ditch, rendering the vehicle inoperable. The driver did not sustain any injuries as a result of the collision.
When Police arrived on scene, they observed that the driver was displaying signs of alcohol impairment. They were subsequently arrested for impaired operation of a conveyance and provided breath samples of nearly double the legal limit.
A 31-year-old resident of Fort McMurray is facing charges:
- Operation while impaired; and
- Operation while over 80mg (alcohol).
The individual, who cannot be named until an Information is sworn, was released from custody and is set to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on Sept. 9, 2026.
