Parkland RCMP urges motorists to make road safety a priority

Parkland, Alta. – Parkland RCMP is reminding motorists that safe driving habits play a critical role in preventing collisions and saving lives. Whether travelling locally or on longer trips, drivers are reminded that responsible choices behind the wheel can mean the difference between arriving safely and a tragic outcome. 

Keep the following in mind before getting behind the wheel: 

• Avoid all distractions: Distracted driving is not limited to texting or talking on a handheld device. It also includes personal grooming, reading, writing, adjusting GPS or audio devices, attending to passengers or pets, or any other activity that might impair your ability to operate a vehicle safely. 
• Never drive impaired: Alcohol and drugs affect judgement, coordination, and reaction time. Arrange a safe ride home. 
• Buckle up: Ensure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained before driving. 
• Be alert at intersections: Slow down, watch for traffic in all directions, and look twice for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists before proceeding. 
• Drive to conditions: Adjust your speed to weather, road, and traffic conditions. 
• Share the road: Be mindful of cyclists, pedestrians, motorcyclists and other road users. 
• Share your travel plans: For longer trips, let someone know your destination, route and expected arrival time. 

Parkland RCMP has responded to the following collision occurrences on Highway 627 in Parkland County: 

• Traffic Collisions (Property Damage Reportable): 19 
• Traffic Collisions (Non-Fatal Injury) : 14
• Traffic Collisions (Fatal) : 4
• Hit and Run Collisions with Person Injured: 1

“Every trip is an opportunity to make the right choices behind the wheel,” says Inspector Kevin McGillivray of the Parkland RCMP. “We all have a part in road safety. Please do your part by being courteous, and by exercising patience.”
