Wood Buffalo RCMP investigate fraud, suspect charged

Fort McMurray, Alta. - In November of 2024, Wood Buffalo RCMP received a report from Fort McMurray Heritage Society (FMHS) regarding missing funds and financial irregularities from their business accounts, with a loss reported at $500,000. Wood Buffalo RCMP General Investigation Section began a lengthy investigation that involved a detailed review of financial records, administrative documentation, electronic evidence and witness statements. Due to the complexity of the allegations, the process required significant time to complete, and charges have now been laid against an individual for allegedly defrauding the FMHS of over $800,000. 

On Aug. 19, 2026, Wood Buffalo RCMP arrested a 44-year-old resident of Fort McMurray in relation to the fraud allegations. 

The individual is facing charges:

• Theft Over $5,000; and
• Fraud Over $5,000.

They have been released from custody on an Undertaking and is set to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on Oct. 14, 2026.

Wood Buffalo RCMP recognize the public interest in this matter, awaiting the outcome of this investigation. “While investigations of this nature can be lengthy and complex, it is essential that all available evidence is thoroughly examined to ensure a complete, impartial, and professional investigation” says Staff Sergeant Mike Robinson, Acting Investigative Services Officer, Wood Buffalo RCMP.
