This Labour Day long weekend, Alberta RCMP officers will be conducting enhanced enforcement on roadways across the province to help keep motorists safe. By following safe driving practices, Albertans can help prevent collisions, injuries, and fatalities while also avoiding a ticket.
Last Labour Day long weekend, the Alberta RCMP issued 1,661 traffic violation tickets and removed 99 impaired drivers from the province’s roads. Drivers are reminded to follow these road safety tips before getting behind the wheel:
- Don’t drive impaired: Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol impairs your judgment, coordination, and reaction time. Impaired driving is both criminal and dangerous.
- Don’t drive fatigued: Driving while tired limits your ability to pay attention to the road and slows your reaction time.
- Don’t drive distracted: Texting, calling, or handling electronic devices while driving increases the risk of a collisions. Preset your handsfree device, GPS, radio, or music before you begin driving and only adjust when safely parked.
- Drive responsibly: Obey speed limits, follow the rules of the road, and avoid aggressive or risky driving behaviours.
- Buckle up: Ensure all occupants are properly restrained using seat belts or appropriate child car seats.
“Last Labour Day long weekend four people lost their lives on Alberta roadways,” says Sgt. Darrin Turnbull, Alberta RCMP Traffic Services. “Let’s work together to make this weekend safe for everyone. Drive sober, stay alert, follow road safety rules, and watch out for one another. If you witness dangerous driving, call 911 immediately.”
