Alberta RCMP removes 125 impaired drivers from roadways over Labour Day long weekend

The Alberta RCMP conducted enhanced enforcement over Labour Day long weekend across the province, resulting in 125 impaired drivers being removed from the roads. 

The following Immediate Roadside Sanctions (IRS) were issued: 

• 11 drivers received IRS 24-hour suspensions; 
• 26 drivers received IRS WARNS; 
• 85 drivers received IRS FAILS; and 
• Three novice drivers/commercial drivers were removed for IRS ZEROS. 

Additionally, 1,125 traffic violation tickets were issued, including 576 for speeding, 24 for distracted driving, and 21 for seatbelt infractions. 

Despite enforcement efforts, there were three injury collisions and two fatal collisions during the enforcement period. Two people lost their lives. 

“Every road fatality is avoidable,” says Sgt. Darrin Turnbull, Alberta RCMP Traffic Services. “Everyone should have been able to make it home safely this past weekend. If someone is about to drive impaired or make an unsafe choice behind the wheel, speak up. A simple conversation can save a life.”
