Cold Lake RCMP makes two impaired operation arrests on the same night

Cold Lake, Alta. - On Sept. 13, 2026, at 7:10 p.m., Cold Lake RCMP members responded to a report of an impaired driver who struck several vehicles along 5^th Avenue. It was reported that several witnesses had detained the driver, preventing him from fleeing the scene. Upon arrival, officers determined that the driver’s ability was impaired by alcohol. The driver was transported to the Cold Lake RCMP detachment where subsequent breath testing revealed that the driver’s blood alcohol concentration was 3.5 times the legal limit. 

Later in the evening, on Sept. 14, 2026, 12:30 a.m., Cold Lake RCMP responded to a cell phone crash notification at Hwy 55 and Hwy 28, South of Cold Lake. On attendance it was determined that a vehicle travelling Westbound on Hwy 55 failed to stop at the stop sign at Hwy 28. The vehicle crashed into a field where the driver fled into the woods. With the assistance of Cold Lake PDS and Cold Lake RPAS, the suspect was located and arrested for impaired operation and failing to remain at the scene of an accident. The driver was transported to the Cold Lake detachment where breath testing revealed that the driver’s blood alcohol concentration was over double the legal limit.  

Both drivers will be charged with the following offences, pending crown approval:

• Impaired operation of a conveyance; 
• Having a blood alcohol concentration exceeding 80mgs% within 2 hours of operating a conveyance; and
• Failing to remain at the collision (Traffic Safety Act).

Both drivers were issued with an appearance notice with court dates in November.

“Impaired driving continues to be a problem and a priority for the Cold Lake RCMP Detachment” says Sgt Russell of the Cold Lake RCMP Detachment. “If your plans involve alcohol make sure you have a transportation plan ahead of time.”
