Southern Alberta, Alta. - In July of 2026, the Southern Alberta District Crime Reduction Unit (SAD CRU) discovered a series of fraudulent vehicle registrations in the greater Calgary area. With assistance from the Special Investigations Unit for the Province of Alberta, it was determined that these fraudulent registrations appeared to be linked to a small group of associates from North-East Calgary. Through further investigation, SAD CRU recovered a fraudulently registered Lexus SUV, confirming it to be a re-vinned stolen vehicle out of Calgary.
With the assistance of the New Westminster Police Department and the Integrated Municipal Provincial Auto Crime Team (IMPACT), police were able to recover two additional fraudulently registered newer model Toyota SUVs in British Columbia, both of which were also confirmed to be stolen re-vinned vehicles from Calgary. The total value of vehicles recovered thus far is approximately $290,000. Police are hopeful that more vehicles can be recovered relating to this investigation.
On Sept. 2, 2026, SAD CRU, with the assistance of the Calgary RCMP Auto-Theft Unit and Calgary Police Service, arrested two individuals and conducted a search warrant at a residence in North-East Calgary. As a result of the investigation, two individuals were charged and were released to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Calgary on Oct. 20, 2026.
A 51-year-old and a 56-year-old both residents of Calgary were charged with three counts of Use, Trafficking or Possession of a Forged Document.
