Fort McMurray, Alta. – For the past several years, Wood Buffalo RCMP and RMWB Bylaw Services’ Traffic team, have been working collaboratively on coordinating traffic safety activities across the region. This has included education and enforcement in areas such as E-Scooters, the OHV pilot program and expansion, and school zone safety. These efforts have been to encourage motorists to make safe decisions every time they get behind the wheel. Traffic safety is not the responsibility of any one agency. By combining resources, expertise and community knowledge, both the Wood Buffalo RCMP and RMWB are able to strengthen prevention efforts and reinforce consistent safety messaging for all road users.
Since February of 2026, RMWB Bylaw Services’ Traffic team have had the enhanced authority to stop drivers caught speeding and issue warnings and tickets.
“Keeping our roads safe requires a collective effort,” says Sgt. Liz MacDonald, NCO i/c of Wood Buffalo RCMP Municipal Traffic Services. “By working alongside our partner agencies, like the RMWB Bylaw Services’ Traffic team, we are able to bring together different areas of expertise with one common purpose: preventing collisions, reducing risky driving behaviours and ensuring everyone using our roadways has the opportunity to arrive at their destination safely.”
Motorists are reminded that their individual choices have a direct impact on the safety of others. Drivers are encouraged to:
- Obey posted speed limits and adjust their speed for road and weather conditions.
- Never drive while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
- Put mobile devices away and remain focused on driving.
- Ensure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained.
- Allow additional time and space when travelling around emergency personnel, roadside workers and enforcement officers.
- Drive with patience and consideration for other motorists, pedestrians and road users.
Wood Buffalo RCMP remains committed to a collaborative approach to traffic safety. Through coordinated enforcement, education and public awareness, partners will continue working together to reduce dangerous driving behaviours, prevent collisions and make roadways throughout the region safer for everyone.
