A collision that shut down Highway #19 near the Church Road overpass, and nearly led to tragedy, has now resulted in six criminal charges against a Saanich man.

On March 3, 2025, just after 4:00 p.m., a white Chevrolet pickup and a grey Toyota Prius collided in the northbound lanes of Highway #19, Parksville, Vancouver Island. The collision caused non-life-threatening injuries to the driver of the white pickup as well as the driver of the grey Toyota and her baby, and BC Highway Patrol began an investigation into the crash.

On February 26, 2026, the BC Prosecution Service approved charges against 28-year-old Matthew St. Pierre, and on March 25, 2026, St. Pierre was arrested for the following:

  • Two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, section 320.13(2) of the Criminal Code,
  • Two counts of impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, section 320.14(2) of the Criminal Code,
  • Two counts of operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol level in excess of .08 causing bodily harm, section 320.14(2) of the Criminal Code.

St. Pierre has been released pending his next scheduled court appearance in Nanaimo Provincial Court on May 12, 2026.
