Charges approved for fatal 2025 collision in Fanny Bay, Vancouver Island

Less than one year after a fatal collision on Highway 19A northbound near Fanny Bay, a Port Alberni man has been criminally charged.

On July 31, 2025, a pickup that was towing a Recreational Vehicle trailer collided with multiple vehicles and resulted in the death of a man who was standing at the side of the road.

On June 24, 2026, the BC Prosecution Service approved the following charges against 61-year-old Barry Munroe:

  • Impaired driving causing death, section 320.14(3) of the Criminal Code,
  • Driving with a blood alcohol content over .08 mg% causing death, section 320.14(3) of the Criminal Code,
  • Obstruction of a peace officer, section 129(a) of the Criminal Code.

Munroe was arrested on July 13, 2026, and remanded in custody for bail hearings.
