BC Highway Patrol Summer Impaired Driving Campaign gets results in Fort St. John and Dawson Creek

As another long weekend approaches, BC Highway Patrol is reminding drivers in the north, and everywhere else in the province, that we all need to refocus on staying sober on our roads.

In a single week between July 20 and July 26, 2026, Dawson Creek and Fort St. John BC Highway Patrol units partnered with their local RCMP detachments to produce 18 vehicle impoundments including:

• 9 x Immediate Roadside Prohibitions (IRP) of 90 days (for a “Fail” reading on an Approved Screening Device, or ASD) or 30 days (a third ASD “Warn” reading within 3 years),
• 1 x 3-day IRP (a driver’s first “Warn” reading on an ASD),
• 1 x 12-hour driving prohibition (for a Class 7 driver with any amount of alcohol in their system),
• 1 x Criminal Code impaired driving charge,
• 6 x vehicle impoundments for excessive speeding,
• 1 x prohibited driver who was arrested and faces 5 additional BC Motor Vehicle Act charges.

“The results from these small teams of police officers show that too many people are still choosing to drive dangerously and while impaired,” says Sergeant Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol. “Consider this an advance warning to everyone: BC Highway Patrol will be doing more proactive work over the long weekend to make sure that people aren’t driving while impaired by drugs and alcohol.”
