A Vancouver man who seriously injured a BC Highway Patrol officer has been convicted and sentenced to jail time for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm.

On February 17, 2024, just after 10:30 a.m., a BC Highway Patrol officer stopped a grey Nissan on Highway #91 near 72 Avenue, in Delta, BC, because the driver was suspected of having an outstanding arrest warrant. Tobin Haas, a 57-year-old Vancouver man, was alone in the car at the time. When he was asked for a driver’s licence and identification, Haas sped away from the scene, dragging the police officer until he was able to disengage.

“Our investigators reviewed CCTV, checked police radio recordings, wrote search warrants, and took witness statements, including from the officer who was hurt,” says Sergeant Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol. “If you get stopped by the police, do not make a bad day worse by fleeing the scene.”

On March 25, 2026, Haas entered a guilty plea to:

  • Dangerous operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm, section 320.13(2) of the Criminal Code;
  • Driving while suspended, section 234 of the BC Motor Vehicle Act.

On September 17, 2026, Haas was sentenced to:

  • An additional 3-year-driving prohibition,
  • A 2-year probation order,
  • 12½ months in jail.

“When you get pulled over by police, it’s almost certain that we already have you recorded on camera,” says Sergeant McLaughlin. “It’s safer for everyone if you wait for the court process to contest the charges against you.”

The police officer involved is still recovering from his injuries.
