Fighting violence in our community: RCMP collaborating with Northern Rockies Child Development Association on expanded initiative for youth in Fort Nelson

Northern Rockies RCMP is proud to be collaborating with the Northern Rockies Child Development Association (NRCDA) as it expands its Violence is Preventable (VIP) program, a school-based initiative designed to support local youth in developing the knowledge and skills needed to build safe, respectful relationships and prevent violence. 

Earlier this year, the Northern Rockies RCMP supported an application by the NRCDA to secure funding through the RCMP Family Violence Initiative Fund, a Government of Canada initiative which aims to promote awareness of relationship and family violence, assist victims of family and relationship violence, and foster crime prevention in Indigenous communities. 

While more than 200 applications were submitted from across Canada, the proposal for expanding the VIP program in Fort Nelson was successful.

The funding will allow the VIP Program to increase the number of presentations it delivers in five local schools.

Through the program, the following topics are divided into age-appropriate classroom-based sessions:

• Self-Regulation & Coping Skills
• Communication Skills
• Conflict Resolution & De-escalation
• Bullying & Cyberbully Prevention
• Healthy Relationships
• Bystander Intervention
• Cultural Safety & Respect
• Substance Use & Violence Awareness
• Help-Seeking & Support Systems
• Leadership & Peer Influence
• Community & Responsibility
• Reflection & Action Planning

Jason Rumming, Detachment Commander for the Northern Rockies RCMP. “Expanding this program within schools is an incredible opportunity to build on the valuable work the NRCDA is already doing with young people here in Fort Nelson, with the ultimate goal of building a safer community for everyone.” 

The NRCDA plans to deliver the presentations over 24 weeks, starting in September 2026.
