Body-worn cameras: Privacy Notice Statement

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is committed to protecting the privacy rights of individuals and safeguarding the personal information under its control.

The definition of "personal information" is any information, in any form, about an identifiable individual. Refer to section 3 of the Privacy Act for further details regarding personal information.

The personal information provided via the body-worn cameras will be used overtly and in plain sight to capture audio and visual recordings of interactions and incidents between uniformed police officers and members of the public. Information collected is in accordance with The RCMP Charter and the Privacy Act. This information will be retained and disposed of in accordance with section 6 of the Privacy Act.

Personal information collected by the Body-Worn Camera and Digital Evidence Management System (BWC-DEMS) is protected from disclosure to unauthorized persons and/or agencies subject to the provisions of the Privacy Act and is described in the RCMP's Personal Information Bank, Criminal Operation Intelligence Records, RCMP PPU 015 and Operational Case Records, RCMP PPU 005. Individuals have the right to the protection of and access to their personal information and to request corrections where the individual believes there is an error or omission. Individuals may contact the department's Access to Information and Privacy Branch to request corrections.

Individuals have the right to file a complaint with the Privacy Commissioner of Canada regarding the department's handling of their personal information. Additional information is available at https://www.priv.gc.ca/en.

For inquiries concerning the treatment of personal information collected by the Body-Worn Camera and Digital Evidence Management System (BWC-DEMS), individuals may contact bwc-cvc@rcmp-grc.gc.ca. Alternatively, individuals may contact the RCMP's Access to Information and Privacy Branch at atipb@rcmp-grc.gc.ca for access to their personal information, pursuant to the provisions of the Privacy Act and the Access to Information Act.
