Week 6: Experience Depot
Oleoresin capsicum spray

OC stands for oleoresin capsicum and it is the active compound in what is known as pepper spray. Cadets learn about OC spray policies and strategies on how and when to use it.
Part of this training includes exposing cadets to OC spray. There is a specialized room at Depot for this where a controlled amount of OC spray is released into the air. It is not a pleasant experience, but it gives cadets a personal understanding of the effects.
I have learned that OC spray is an effective tool to keep myself safe.
Police Defensive Tactics: Test 1
In week 6, cadets take their first test in Police Defensive Tactics. This is a scenario-based test reflecting a realistic police encounter. Cadets must react to the situation using the basic public safety and police skills learned to date.
Highlights
Depot spotlight: Information Technology Support Services
Depot's Information Technology Support Services provides solutions, support and maintenance for computers, software and more.
Due to the pandemic, operations have changed to match evolving health measures. Like many can relate to, that means remote working. Here at Depot, that meant remote training, too.
After the initial training disruption, returning cadets isolated for 2 weeks. To keep training on track, the Information Technology unit set up computers in the cadets' rooms for online lectures.
Posting spotlight: Ulukhaktok Detachment, Northwest Territories
Ulukhaktok (pronounced oo-loo-hak-talk), is a hamlet on Victoria Island in the Northwest Territories. It is in the Amundsen Gulf and is the second most northerly post in the territory.
Ulukhaktok Detachment serves the 500 nuvialuit or Inuit residents of the area. It has conventional police trucks, snowmobiles and ATVs. Members posted here should prepare for a cold, dark winter and bright summer nights.
There are many signs of traditional ways of life throughout each day. The community's main sources of income are hunting, trapping and fishing.
The breathtaking scenery is something few Canadians get to experience. Local wildlife includes muskox, polar bears and caribou. It's a great place to enjoy the great outdoors. The community is very inviting and has many events, too!
Ulukhaktok is home to the northernmost golf course. The Billy Joss Open Celebrity Golf Tournament takes place here each summer. This event attracts golfers, as well as NHL and CFL players from around the world.
Character-based leadership
An important pillar of RCMP Vision150 is our people. Character-based leadership is an evidence-based approach that focuses on leadership qualities. It is not only about the position one holds, but also people skills, character and know-how. Character-based leadership contributes to a healthy and inclusive organization.
This approach will be introduced to cadets and employees in the months and years to come. It focusses on the notion that character is not fixed, but develops throughout life.
