About Federal Policing National Security

Under the Security Offences Act, the RCMP has the primary responsibility to perform peace officer duties in relation to criminal offences that constitute a threat to the security of Canada as defined in the Canadian Security Intelligence Service Act. Federal Policing national security investigative teams across Canada, with central support and oversight from Federal Policing National Security, address a wide range of criminal threats to Canada's national security, including:

  • Violent extremism and terrorism (promoting, facilitating, threatening, or using acts of serious violence against persons or property for a political, religious, or ideological objective)
  • Espionage or sabotage
  • Foreign-influenced activities that are harmful to Canada's interests
  • Activities advocating for, or intending to cause, the destruction or violent overthrow of government systems in Canada

In addition to its legislated national security mandate, the RCMP's National Security Program also performs peace officer duties in relation to:

  • Criminal offences targeting critical infrastructure
  • Certain extraterritorial criminal activity such as hostage takings or terrorism offences involving Canadian persons
  • Criminal activity with a nexus to national security or Canadian national interests
