The Sussex RCMP is investigating an incident involving a driver who failed to stop for police, which later resulted in an altercation involving a dog in Norton, N.B.
On May 3, 2026, at approximately 1 a.m., a member of the Sussex RCMP Detachment was conducting traffic enforcement on Route 1 when he observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed. The member attempted to conduct a traffic stop, however the vehicle failed to stop and fled. A pursuit was not initiated.
A short time later, the member located a vehicle matching the description parked behind a business on Route 124 in Norton. The member approached the vehicle and observed a passenger inside who began moving rapidly upon noticing police presence. The sound of a dog could also be heard inside the closed vehicle.
The driver returned to the vehicle shortly thereafter and was asked to provide identification. Despite being instructed not to do so, the driver opened the vehicle door, at which time a large dog exited the vehicle, barking and aggressively lunging toward the member.
The driver, who is also the owner of the dog, made minimal effort to control the animal as it continued to advance toward the member. The member, who was alone at the time, attempted to create distance and briefly pushed the dog away, however, the dog continued to act aggressively and close the distance.
Fearing for his safety, the member discharged a single round from his service pistol in an attempt to stop the threat. The dog was struck and died at the scene.
A second member arrived within minutes. The dog owner then left the area abruptly.
The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) was consulted and has reviewed the file, however, it has been determined that it does not meet their mandate to investigate.
The investigation is ongoing.
