Counterfeit money

The New Brunswick RCMP is warning the public about an increase in reports of counterfeit currency being used during in-person transactions arranged through online marketplaces such as Kijiji and similar platforms.

Police have received complaints from individuals who arranged to sell items online and were later provided with counterfeit cash at the time of the exchange. In most cases, the falsified bills were only discovered after the suspects had left the meeting location.

“While online marketplaces are a convenient way to buy and sell items, they can also be targeted by individuals with criminal intent,” said Corporal Hans Ouellette. “We encourage the public to remain vigilant and take precautions when meeting buyers or sellers.”

Police are reminding residents of the following safety tips when conducting online transactions:

-Inspect cash carefully: Check for security features on bills, such as raised ink, holograms, and transparent windows.

-Consider alternative payment methods: Digital payments may reduce risk.

-Trust your instincts: If something or someone seems suspicious, cancel the transaction.

In addition to these incidents, police are reminding residents that scams continue to occur in other contexts, including fraudulent housing insulation-related schemes. These scams often involve individuals misrepresenting services or using deceptive practices to obtain money or goods.

Anyone who suspects they have received counterfeit money is asked not to handle it further and to contact police. If possible, note any identifying details about the suspect and the circumstances of the transaction.

Individuals with information is asked to contact their local police detachment or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or www.crimestoppers.ca.
