Quick intervention by a member of the Lamèque RCMP detachment saved a youth in mental distress in Chiasson-Office, N.B.

On June 2, 2026, at approximately 6:30 p.m., members of the Lamèque RCMP detachment responded to a report of a youth in mental distress at a beach in Chiasson Office. While members were on their way, the youth had entered the water.

Upon arrival, the responding members observed the youth approximately 100 from the shoreline, in rough and cold conditions. The youth could no longer feel or move her arms or legs. Cpl. Sylvain Bergeron immediately entered the water and swam to the youth. He was able to grab hold of her and stop her from drowning. The youth was suffering from hypothermia by the time she was brought back to the shore by Cpl. Bergeron.

The youth was treated and transported to hospital under the Mental Health Act. Cpl. Bergeron was treated at the scene for his exposure to the freezing water temperatures.

"Situations like these can sometimes be difficult to navigate, but Cpl. Bergeron’s quick action was instrumental in saving this youths life," said Sgt. Charles Dubois with the Lamèque RCMP detachment. "He displayed core RCMP values at a moment’s notice and as a result, everyone made it home safely at the end of the day."

Members of the Shippagan Fire Department and Ambulance New Brunswick also attended the scene.
