RCMP warning public of suspected scam targeting residents

The Grand Bay-Westfield RCMP is warning the public about a suspected scam that has recently been reported in the region and may be occurring in other parts of New Brunswick.

On July 14, 2026, at approximately 1:15 p.m., members of the Grand Bay-Westfield RCMP received a report of a suspicious interaction that occurred in the parking lot of a business on River Valley Drive. A man approached an individual and attempted to sell what he claimed was a gold ring. The man provided an emotional story in an effort to persuade the individual to purchase the jewelry. No money was exchanged, and the individual left the area in a light-coloured vehicle.

Police have received information indicating that similar incidents may have occurred elsewhere in the province. In one reported incident, a man driving a white Jeep Cherokee allegedly approached individuals in a parking lot in Sussex and attempted to sell a gold chain while claiming he needed money for fuel. In a second incident, a man and a woman approached a man in a parking lot in Saint John, attempted to sell him a ring, and subsequently stole his necklace. 

The Grand Bay-Westfield RCMP is reminding the public to exercise caution when approached by strangers offering to sell jewelry, valuables, or other items in parking lots, on roadways, or in public places. Scammers often use emotional stories or create a sense of urgency to pressure people into making quick decisions.

“Residents should be wary of unsolicited offers involving jewelry or other valuables, particularly when the seller claims to be in distress or urgently needs money,” says Sgt. Ben Comley of the Grand Bay-Westfield RCMP. “If an offer seems too good to be true, it likely is.”

Police are also encouraging residents to remain aware of their surroundings and safeguard their personal belongings when interacting with unknown individuals.
