The Codiac Regional RCMP remains committed to addressing illicit drug activity in Greater Moncton through a measured approach that combines enforcement, prevention, harm reduction, and community engagement. Our Crime Reduction Unit and Community Policing Unit regularly conducts open-air drug enforcement initiatives throughout Greater Moncton and it remains one of their top priorities.

As we have done previously, the Codiac Regional RCMP will start another strategic enforcement operation the week of August 17th which will include dedicated patrols in vulnerable areas of the downtown core for a period of two months, with a focus on addressing public drug use, disorder, community concerns, and criminal activity in public spaces. Officers will continue to encourage appropriate referrals and support options for individuals experiencing substance use challenges. Through collaborative frontline efforts with local organizations like YMCA ReConnect Alternative Dispatch, municipal bylaw officers, and the Horizon and Vitalité Health Networks, the Codiac Regional RCMP is focused on reducing criminal activity and enhancing the quality of life for all residents, businesses, and visitors.

The Codiac Regional RCMP also recognizes the amendments to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, which reinforce that problematic substance use should be addressed primarily as a health and social issue. As a result, officers are required to consider alternatives to prosecution for simple possession offences, including taking no further action, issuing warnings, or referring individuals to community-based treatment and support services where appropriate. These measures are intended to promote education, treatment, rehabilitation, and social reintegration while reducing stigma associated with substance use. (Controlled Drugs and Substances Act 10.1)

At the same time, the Codiac Regional RCMP continues to prioritize enforcement against those involved in the trafficking, production, importation, and distribution of illicit drugs, recognizing the significant harm these activities cause to our communities.

Public safety remains our highest priority. While this comprehensive approach can take more time to see results, it is essential to assist individuals out of the cycle of addiction through support systems and programs which may not be available in provincial correctional facilities.

We encourage anyone with information about criminal activity to contact the Codiac Regional RCMP at 506-857-2400. Information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. In the event of an emergency or a crime in progress, members of the public should call 911 immediately.
