Three individuals arrested, two charged, following forcible confinement and assault with a weapon

A 44-year-old woman from Esgenoôpetitj First Nation, N.B., and a 41-year-old man from Lavilette N.B., have been charged and a 45-year-old man from Village St-Laurent, N.B., has been arrested in connection with a forcible confinement incident and assault with a weapon that occurred in the community of Esgenoôpetitj First Nation, N.B. 

On August 29, 2026, at approximately 2:04 a.m., members of the Tracadie and Neguac detachments responded to a report of a man who was held against his will and assaulted with a weapon earlier the same night. The man later made his way to safety and called police. 

The victim, a 59-year-old man from Tracadie, N.B., was transported to hospital with what were believed to be serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. The individuals were known to each other, and there was no risk to the general public. 

At approximately 4:30 a.m. the same morning, a 44-year-old woman was located at her residence in the community of Esgenoôpetitj First Nation and subsequently arrested. Later the same day, 44-year-old Chrissy Dedam appeared in Miramichi Povincial Court and was charged with assault with a weapon. She was remanded into custody. On September 1, 2026, she reappeared in Miramichi by way of tele-remand and was denied bail.  

On September 1, at approximately 11 a.m., a 45-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident. He was later released on conditions and will reappear in provincial court at a later date. 

Later that day, a third individual, a 41-year-old man, was also arrested in connection with the incident. On September 2, 2026, 41-year-old Maxime Bouchard appeared in Miramichi Provincial court and was charged with breach of probation. He was remanded into custody and is scheduled to reappear in court on September 8, 2026.
