The New Brunswick RCMP is aware of concerns from the public regarding the operation of electric dirt bikes on streets, sidewalks, parks, and trails.
Electric dirt bikes are not considered bicycles under New Brunswick Motor Vehicle Act. Many are capable of reaching speeds upwards of 70 km/h and can pose a safety risk to pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and trail users when operated in unauthorized areas.
To operate an electric dirt bike safely, owners should ensure they understand any applicable laws and bylaws, including registration, insurance, licensing, helmet, and trail access requirements.
The following are general guidelines. Specific restrictions may vary depending on local bylaws, posted signage, and other applicable laws.
Electric dirt bikes may be operated:
-On private property with the permission of the property owner
-On designated off-road trails where their use is permitted
-In other locations specifically authorized under applicable laws, regulations, bylaws and property rules
Electric dirt bikes are not permitted in many public areas, including:
-Streets and highways
-Sidewalks
-Parks
-Walking trails and active transportation trails
-School grounds
-Parking lots and other public spaces where off-road vehicles are prohibited
Individuals found operating electric dirt bikes in unauthorized areas may face fines or charges under the New Brunswick Motor Vehicle Act, including the possibility of vehicle seizure and impoundment at the owner’s expense.
If you see an electric dirt bike operating where they are not permitted, please contact your local police. Try to provide a location, vehicle description, direction of travel and licence plate number. Please call your local police if you have any concerns and in case of emergencies always call 911.
