Baker Lake man charged with Second Degree Murder

The Nunavut RCMP’s Major Crime Unit have charged a 28-year-old man with second-degree murder. 

Background:

On April 2, 2026, shortly after 5:00 a.m, the Baker Lake RCMP responded to a call for service requesting assistance with an unresponsive male. The male was transported to the Baker Lake Health Centre, where he was pronounced deceased. 

The death was deemed suspicious in nature, and the investigation was taken over by the Nunavut RCMP’s Major Crime Unit. 

On April 6, 2026, Richard Niuqtuq (age 28) of Baker Lake, was arrested and charged with:

• Second-degree murder of George Narkyagik (age 45), contrary to Section 235 C.C

Niuqtuq was taken before a Justice of the Peace and remanded into custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 27, 2026, in Iqaluit, Nunavut. 

As the investigation is ongoing, no further information will be provided at this time.
