Baker Lake youth charged with Second Degree Murder

The Nunavut RCMP Major Crime Unit have charged a youth with second-degree murder.

Background:

On April 2, 2026, shortly after 5:00 a.m., the Baker Lake RCMP responded to a call for service requesting assistance with an unresponsive male. The male was transported to the Baker Lake Health Centre, where he was pronounced deceased.

The death was deemed suspicious in nature, and the investigation was taken over by the Nunavut RCMP Major Crime Unit.

On April 6, 2026, Richard Niutqtuq (age 28) of Baker Lake, was arrested and charged with the second-degree murder of George Narkyagik. 

The Major Crime Unit continued their investigation and identified a youth as a suspect in the death of Mr. Narkyagik. 

On June 3, 2026, the youth was arrested and charged with:

• Second-degree murder, contrary to Section 235(1) C.C.

The youth was taken before a Justice of the Peace and remanded into custody. The next court appearance is scheduled for June 23, 2026, in Iqaluit, Nunavut.

As the investigation is ongoing, no further information will be provided at this time.
