Commanding Officer of the Northwest Territories RCMP

Chief Superintendent Dyson Smith assumed leadership of the Northwest Territories RCMP in August of 2024.

Chief Superintendent Smith in joined the RCMP in 2000 and was posted to Red Deer, Alberta. He subsequently served in Nunavut, the Northwest Territories, followed by Nova Scotia and NHQ Division. In 2018, he was commissioned to the rank of Inspector as the Officer in Charge of the North District in the Northwest Territories. He also held the roles of the Officer in Charge of the Yellowknife Detachment as well as the Assistant Criminal Operations Officer.

Following his promotion to Superintendent in 2022, he was appointed to the role of Criminal Operations Officer for the Northwest Territories. He had been acting as Commanding Officer of the Northwest Territories since May of 2024 prior to his appointment.

Chief Superintendent Smith, a Kespu'kwitk East-Coast Métis was born and raised in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. He has a Bachelor's Degree from Saint Mary's University, majoring in Sociology with a minor in Criminology. He and his wife have three children.
