Northwest Territories RCMP urge wilderness travellers to be vigilant for signs of missing persons

In support of ongoing efforts to locate persons reported missing, the Northwest Territories RCMP urge hunters, trappers and anyone travelling on the land this season to be observant and report any unusual findings, including objects that seem out of place and human remains.

As the ice and snow melt, previously hidden objects, may become visible in the wilderness.

What to look for:

• Bones or skeletal remains: Bones may appear weathered and scattered due to wildlife and environmental activity.
• Personal items: Clothing, backpacks and other items that seem out of place in the environment.
• Unusual odors: In some cases, decomposition may be recent enough to produce a noticeable scent.

Should you come across possible unusual objects or human remains, do not touch or move anything, as this may compromise evidence. Mark the location with your GPS, flagging tape, or some other method which will allow police to find it. Take photos if possible. Report the find to your local RCMP Detachment police as soon as you are in a position to do so.
