The Yellowknife RCMP is implementing deterrent measures this summer to prevent bicycle theft.
The Yellowknife RCMP has launched a bait bike program for the first time. These bikes will be placed in various areas of the city and can be monitored at all times.
A total of 62 bicycles were reported stolen to the Yellowknife RCMP in 2024, and 51 in 2025.
The bait bike program is already in place with several police forces and has proven to be an effective approach to deterring crime and apprehending bike thieves more quickly.
To prevent bike thefts, Yellowknife RCMP also recommends that residents follow these tips:
• Do not leave your bike unlocked in public – bikes can be stolen from the back of a pick-up truck or vehicle.
• Lock your bike with two quality locks – a U-lock and a cable lock. By using more than one style of lock it will take thieves two types of tools and twice as much time to steal your bike.
• Take the extra step and remove the seat or a wheel as an extra deterrent.
• If storing your bike at home, store it in a safe location using a lock or inside a locked area.
• Help police identify your bike by recording serial numbers and taking photographs of your bike.
To report a stolen bike, contact to local RCMP detachment. Yellowknife RCMP can be reached at 867-669-1111.
