Yellowknife RCMP recover stolen vehicle and firearm after motor vehicle collision

Police in Yellowknife have charged an individual after a motor vehicle collision led to the seizure of a firearm.

On August 6th, officers conducting a bicycle patrol were alerted to a motor vehicle collision that had just taken place near Walmart, wherein an SUV struck another vehicle and fled the scene.

Officers located the vehicle a short distance away with the suspect driver outside. Upon making contact with police, the suspect got into the vehicle and fled from police.

A short time later, officers located the vehicle abandoned at a dead-end. With the assistance of G Division Police Dog Services and a remote piloted aircraft, the suspect was located hiding in some nearby bushes and arrested.

A search of the suspect, who also exhibited signs of intoxication, revealed he was in possession of a folding rifle and ammunition. The vehicle was found to have been recently stolen.

The suspect was transported to the detachment where breath samples in excess of the prescribed blood-alcohol limit were obtained.

As a result, 26-year-old Clayton Koe has been charged with:

• Careless use of a firearm, contrary to section 86(1) of the Criminal Code
• Carrying a concealed weapon, contrary to section 90(1) of the Criminal Code
• Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, contrary to section 320.13(1) of the Criminal Code
• Failure to comply with conditions of an undertaking, contrary to section 145(4)(a) of the Criminal Code
• Flight from a peace officer, contrary to section 320.17 of the Criminal Code
• Operation of a conveyance with a blood-alcohol content exceeding 80mg of alcohol per 100mL of blood, contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the Criminal Code
• Operation of a conveyance while impaired, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code
• Possession of a prohibited weapon while knowing possession is unauthorized, contrary to section 92(2) of the Criminal Code
• Possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, contrary to section 94(1) of the Criminal Code
• Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000, contrary to section 354(1) of the Criminal Code
• Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000, contrary to section 354(1) of the Criminal Code
• Possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition without licence, contrary to section 95(1) of the Criminal Code
• Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, contrary to section 88(1) of the Criminal Code
• Resisting a peace officer, contrary to section 129(a) of the Criminal Code
• Unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon, contrary to section 91(2) of the Criminal Code
• 2 counts of possession of a weapon contrary to a weapons possession prohibition order.
• Possession of liquor at an unlawful place, contrary to section 78 of the Liquor Act
• Operating a vehicle without a driver’s licence, contrary to section 66(1) of the Motor Vehicles Act
• Failure to remain at the scene of a collision, contrary to section 259(1)(a) of the Motor Vehicles Act

He appeared in court for a bail hearing and was remanded into custody.
