The Northwest Territories RCMP is continuing the search for a suspect in the mass shooting incident in Fort Smith involving a male suspect that left three persons injured in the early hours of Saturday, August 22nd, 2026.

At approximately 2:12 a.m., on August 22nd, the Fort Smith RCMP received a report of a mass shooting outside a local business on McDougal Road. The male suspect fled the scene.

RCMP officers responded and initiated an investigation. A first public alert was issued at 2:56 a.m. asking residents of Fort Smith to shelter in place. The alert was renewed at 7:53 a.m. and remains active.

The RCMP Critical Incident Command has been engaged, and multiple resources are assisting, including the Major Crimes Unit, Territorial Crime Reduction, Police Dog Services, Traffic Services, Remote Piloted Aircraft Services, members of Emergency Response Teams from the Northwest Territories and the Yukon, and the Yellowknife General Investigation Section.

At this time, the suspect remains at large and is believed to be armed. He has dark hair and dark eyes, has facial hair, is of medium built. He was wearing a grey sweater. If you see the suspect, do not approach and contact the RCMP immediately.

Also, reports of AI generated photos of the suspect being shared on social media have been reported to the RCMP. We are advising the public that these images do not match the descriptors of the suspect, and we are requesting the public to not share it any further as it is inaccurate.
