The suspect in the shooting incident that occurred early morning on Saturday, August 22nd, has been arrested and is in custody.

At approximately 2:12 a.m., on August 22nd, the Fort Smith RCMP received a report of a shooting outside a local business on McDougal Road that left three persons injured. The male suspect fled the scene. A shelter in place order was issued shortly after and lifted on Saturday afternoon.

Multiple RCMP units were deployed to support the investigation and locate the suspect. At approximately 4:30 a.m., on Sunday, August 23rd, the RCMP arrested the suspect without incident. Charges are forthcoming, pending further investigation.

“The tireless efforts of our officers and specialized units made it possible to resolve this incident. We are committed to ensuring the safety of Fort Smith, and I would like to thank the residents and local leadership for their continued cooperation and patience”, says Inspector James Lai, officer in charge of South District.

In addition, the RCMP is asking that anyone present during the altercation that preceded the shooting to attend the Fort Smith RCMP detachment between 1:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. on Monday, August 24th, to speak with an investigator. If you have already spoken with an investigator, we ask that you still come in to provide a statement.

Anyone with mobility or transportation issues can call the detachment at 867-872-1111 and arrangements will be made for an officer to take your statement.
