The Yellowknife RCMP is working to rescue two stranded boaters who were travelling from Yellowknife to Lutsel K’e.

The Yellowknife RCMP was notified on September 10th that the two boaters were overdue after they failed to arrive at their destination. They had left Yellowknife on September 4th.

The Yellowknife RCMP initiated a search and rescue operation and mobilized a SAR manager, with support from Lutsel K’e RCMP. Additional support was requested from the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association (CASARA), the Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) and the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary. Lutsel K’e community members and leadership were also engaged in the search efforts.

Late in the evening of Thursday, September 10th, the boaters were located in the East Arm by JRCC, who was conducting a search flight in the area. Supplies and a communication device were airdropped, and it was confirmed that both boaters were uninjured.

It is believed that weather and mechanical issues were responsible for this incident.

Ongoing efforts are underway to bring them to safety, and flights are being coordinated to reach their location.

The Yellowknife RCMP would like to remind the public to be well-prepared before heading out on the water and to carry enough fuel and food in case of unforeseen circumstances. Weather conditions can change rapidly.

The Yellowknife RCMP would like to thank all partners who supported the search efforts.
