Following a thorough investigation, the Northwest Territories RCMP Major Crimes Unit (MCU) has laid a charge of murder in connection with the disappearance of Jovan Sandhu.

Jovan Sandhu was reported missing on August 9, 2026. He was last seen at the ferry crossing in Tsiigehtchic on August 7, 2026.

The investigation was quickly transferred to the Major Crimes Unit. During its investigation, the MCU recovered evidence that supported a charge of murder, contrary to section 235 of the Criminal Code, against 40-year-old Waylon Storr, of Inuvik.

Waylon Storr was arrested in Inuvik on October 16, 2026, and has been remanded into custody with a court appearance scheduled for Tuesday, October 20, 2026.

In the days following the reported incident, a significant search operation by the RCMP, local community members and the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association (CASARA) was undertaken to locate Jovan Sandhu, based on the belief that his body was in the Mackenzie River. Jovan Sandhu’s body has not been recovered.

The RCMP would like to acknowledge and thank both CASARA and the community of Tsiigehtchic for their dedicated efforts in trying to locate Jovan Sandhu. CASARA did several hours of flights and sent a drone operator to search the area. The community of Tsiigehtchic actively participated in the search operation.
