Bonnyville RCMP issues shelter in place - Update 2

Bonnyville, Alta. – On Apr. 9, 2026, shortly before 9 a.m., Bonnyville RCMP received a report of an individual with a long firearm on their lap in a vehicle, on 46 Avenue, near 39 Street, in Bonnyville. A shelter in place for the nearby community and school was issued by the Bonnyville RCMP while they responded to the incident. With public safety as the highest priority, Bonnyville RCMP set up containment immediately.
The lone occupant of the vehicle was taken into custody without incident through the Alberta RCMP's deployment and arrest plan. No one was injured as a result of this incident. The shelter in place was lifted once the suspect was in custody.
A 31-year-old resident of Cold Lake, is facing the following charges:
- unlawful possession of a firearm;
- failing to comply with release orders; and
- possession for the purpose of trafficking-controlled drugs and substances.
Bonnyville RCMP had assistance from Alberta RCMP's RTOC, Emergency Response Team north, Cold Lake RCMP Police Dog Services and Regional Police and Crisis Team; Eastern Alberta District’s Crime Reduction Unit, Provincial Criminal Intelligence Coordinator, Air Services Section, Elk Point RCMP and Cold Lake RCMP during this incident. Emergency Medical Services were placed on standby as well.
