About the RCMP in New Brunswick

The headquarters building in Fredericton.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in New Brunswick, also known as J Division, is made up of a diverse team of highly trained professionals dedicated to meeting the policing needs of communities across the province.

All employees are committed to upholding provincial and federal laws, combating organized crime, protecting public safety, securing our borders, and supporting national security - including the safety of state officials.

Many team members work in specialized operational support units that assist district-level investigations, while others serve in federal sections that handle matters of national and international significance.

History of the RCMP in New Brunswick

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has a long and distinguished history in New Brunswick. Contract policing officially began on April 1, 1932, when the RCMP took over responsibilities from the former Provincial Police Force. At that time, New Brunswick became known as J Division, and the first divisional headquarters was established at Old Government House in Fredericton.

Initially, 127 members were stationed at 33 detachments across the province. These members came from a combination of the RCMP, the former New Brunswick Provincial Police, and the Federal Preventive Services. The early fleet included 59 cars, 2 motorcycles, and 7 boats. The total cost to establish the RCMP in New Brunswick was $100,000.

In 1988, J Division Headquarters relocated from Old Government House to a new modern complex at the top of Regent Street in Fredericton, where it remains today.
